The Cockshutt family was one of the most powerful and influential families in Brantford.

Edmund Lister Cockshutt wanted to share his love of horticulture and art with future generations.

He lived at Glenhyrst for over 30 years and wanted his home and gardens, which gave him so much happiness, to be maintained for the citizens of Brantford after his death.
